Anne Hathaway, renowned for her grace and talent in Hollywood, has achieved five years of sobriety, a significant milestone in her journey. She is also an accomplished actor, and is set to star in the highly anticipated upcoming film “The Idea of You.”
A mother’s inspiration
The Oscar-winning actress first shared her decision to quit drinking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2019, saying she wanted to be present for her sons Jonathan, 8, and Jack, 4. It was a moment of vulnerability and honesty that resonated with many. During the conversation, she shared her realization that alcohol was no longer serving her well-being and her commitment to stay sober while her son was living at home.
“I’m going to stop drinking while my son’s living in my house. I don’t love the way I drink, and Jonathan’s getting to an age where he does need me all the time,” she said.
“I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school. I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover, and that was enough for me. I didn’t love that one.” This initial public acknowledgment marked the beginning of Hathaway’s sober journey.
Way of life changes for mental health
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway talked about how drinking alcohol wasn’t for her. She said, ‘I knew deep down it (alcohol) wasn’t for me’. The multiple award-winning actress explained that she made many lifestyle changes in support of her mental health, including giving up activities she knew were ‘draining‘ or that caused spirals. “My personal experience with it is that everything is better. For me, it was wallowing fuel. And I don’t like to wallow,” Hathaway continued.
Despite her past experiences with alcohol, Hathaway admits that her experience is unique to her. While she emphasizes that it simply wasn’t compatible with her well-being, she recognizes that others may have different reactions and relationships with alcohol. Her statement, “If you’re allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, you don’t argue with it. So I stopped arguing with it,“ reflects this understanding. At the same time, highlighting the importance of individual choice and the necessity of listening to one’s body and mind.
It is not just Anne Hathaway who has spoken publicly about her sobriety. Jessica Simpson, Eminem, and Chrissy Teigen have done the same. In July 2022, Teigen wrote on Instagram: “Not a drop of alcohol in 365 days!”
Finding and maintaining balance
Making sobriety stick involves more than just abstaining from alcohol; it’s about creating a lifestyle that reinforces your decision every day. This has meant embracing a holistic approach to health and well-being for Hathaway. Eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and nurturing mental health are all integral components of maintaining sobriety.
Facing the reality of relapse
Relapse is a reality that many in recovery face, often unexpectedly. It’s crucial to recognize that relapse is not a sign of failure but rather a part of the journey. The key is to remain vigilant, seek support, and take things one day at a time. A story like Hathaway’s reminds us that if a slip occurs, it’s essential to seek help immediately and continue moving forward.
A testament to growth
Here’s to many more years of strength, self-discovery, and the boundless possibilities that lie ahead. We celebrate you, Anne!
