Tiger Woods gets lifetime exemption for special events on PGA tour

Tiger Woods has been awarded a lifetime exemption by the PGA Tour for its signature events.

Woods, 48, has won 82 PGA titles in his career – including 15 majors – but his ranking has plummeted in recent years as he’s battled health issues.

From next season, though, Woods will be guaranteed a spot in the eight $20million signature events on the Tour, as a ‘player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80 [plus] career wins,’ a memo sent to players read.

Those events include the likes of the RBC Heritage and Wells Fargo Championship.

The events have limited fields, though the PGA’s board will also approve a 72-player minimum for them, according to reports.

The legendary golfer missed the cut at this past week’s US Open in Pinehurst

Woods has hardly played this season, having appeared only in The Masters, PGA Championship and US Open, as well as the Genesis Invitational, which he pulled out of with the flu.

The legendary golfer missed the cut at the US Open last weekend, while his friend Rory McIlroy came agonizingly close to winning the tournament.

The competition was ultimately won for a second time by Bryson DeChambeau.

While Woods’ fame remains enormous, it’s been some time since he’s won a major.

His last big win came in 2019, when he stunningly won The Masters, while his most recent major win before that came back at the 2008 US Open.

He is tied with Sam Snead for the most PGA Tour wins of all-time.

Woods has also parlayed his fame and success into his own golf apparel brand, Sun Day Red, which went on sale in May.
