They should be in bloom by Christmas if planted in mid- to late September.

The amaryllis plant produces large, trumpet-shaped flowers in a variety of colors ranging from red to pink, white, orange, salmon, or burgundy. There are also two-toned and striped options. The amaryllis blossom can be single or double and measures 4 to 8 inches across.

Small bulbs typically produce one 1-2 ft. stem with two to three flowers. Larger bulbs can produce up to three stems, each with 3-5 flowers. Amaryllis plants that are properly cared for can bloom for up to 75 years! And, as the plant grows older, the bulb grows larger, producing more stems with more flowers.

How To Grow Amaryllis

Soak the amaryllis bulbs for a few hours to rehydrate the roots and accelerate growth. Fill a pot with compost and place the bulb on top; don’t use a pot that’s too large: amaryllis thrive in pots.

Fill with compost and water thoroughly. Leave your amaryllis bulb in a warm, dark place for a few weeks before bringing it inside when a shoot appears. Flowers should be ready in six to eight weeks.

Amaryllis blooms in six to eight weeks after planting. Using the eight-week rule, you can enjoy flowers right up until Easter by stagger planting; simply count back from the desired blooming period. All amaryllis, from spidery cybisters to 75cm-tall giants, have the same needs.

They prefer a rich, well-drained growing medium in a warm, light location. This can be accomplished by incorporating grit or sand, as well as leaf mould or well-rotted manure, into multi-purpose compost.

Amaryllis, unlike some other bulbs, do not require a rest or dormant period. If they are allowed to grow, they will bloom again. Bloom time, on the other hand, can be controlled by allowing the bulb to go dormant (stop growing) for a period of time. Plants use very little of their energy reserves during this resting period (dormancy).
