But just before Scott McTominay headed home the match-winner, fans highlighted Maguire’s involvement in the goal.
After picking up the ball in his own half from a Chelsea clearance, Luke Shaw played a forward pass into Maguire’s feet, who was positioned in a pocket behind the Chelsea press.
The 30-year-old then pivoted and half-turned before knocking the ball forward to dribble into open space.
He then dished the ball out to the left flank for Sergio Reguilon.
Reguilon then drove forward before finding Alejandro Garnacho, whose cross to the far post was met by McTominay.
And fans were raving about Maguire’s part in the play and believed things may have been different for him if he had signed for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City instead of joining Man Utd.
One fan said: “I can’t imagine what pep would’ve done with him man.”
A second said: “Pep would’ve cooked with Maguire.”
A third said: “If Pep had got Maguire, he would be getting (Rio) Ferdinand and (Nemanja) Vidic comparisons.”
Another said: “A real defender.”
A fifth said: “This is a proper ball playing defender right here.”
A sixth fan added: “We should consider playing him at DM,” though fans were not exactly keen on the idea.
Maguire’s play before the goal came after the England star was accused of “hiding” against Newcastle by Ashley Williams.
The win puts Man Utd level on points with Tottenham and just three points behind Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Chelsea remained in tenth after results elsewhere went in their favour.
