The darker, R-rated tone of this movie will better fit Constantine’s narrative. This version of Constantine will live outside of James Gunn’s new DC Universe, as it was revealed in recent updates that Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 is being produced as part of DC’s Elseworlds. Lorenzo di Bonaventura discussed his expectations for the project and compared it to his work on Madame Web in an interview with Comicbook.com. Stressing the distinctiveness of both personalities, he said, “I hope it does [move forward], because it’s a great character.”Since playing the Hellblazer for the first time in the 2005 film Constantine, Reeves has persistently pushed for a follow-up.
When it was revealed in September 2022 that Constantine 2 was finally in production, fans were ecstatic. There have been other updates regarding the film’s direction since then.Constantine 2 will not be a part of the normal DC Universe narrative because it was decided to make it an Elseworlds film. “It’s got to be something really special for us to tell that story outside of our regular continuity, and to spend the money on it to make it,” said James Gunn, indicating his high expectations for Elseworlds projects. Constantine 2’s ongoing development indicates that it may be able to live up to this expectation.
