‘I would be so anxious’: Anne Hathaway reveals she used to TREMBLE on red carpets 20 years ago but now she ‘enjoys’ the limelight

Anne Hathaway used to feel anxious on the red carpets for movies like Ella Enchanted.

The Oscar winning star told Entertainment Tonight at the Elle Awards that her fear was so bad it affected her physically.

‘I used to come to these things and I would truly tremble. I would be so anxious,’ Hathaway told the site. ‘It is a little sad that I was able to be in all those wonderful places and the only thing I could feel was scared.’

Hard to cope: Anne Hathaway used to feel anxious on the red carpets for movies like Ella Enchanted. The Oscar winning star told Entertainment Tonight at the Elle Awards that her fear was so bad it affected her physically. Seen Monday

The past: Hathaway at the screening of The Score in 2001 in NYC; she was only about 19 at the time

These days she is just happy to be asked to come.

‘I’m so lucky that my life has always been very, very full and fortunate. But I’m in a place where I’m able to enjoy it differently,’ she said.

And she has learned how to enjoy the fun.

‘I’m just living life a little differently now and I’m enjoying it. I’m so focused and connected to my gratitude, to be in a place this wonderful,’ she said. ‘Nights like this are rare, and they should be enjoyed.’

She does not look her most comfortable: Hathaway during FOX TV Up Front Celebration at Lincoln Center in New York City in 1999

In November she turns 40.

And she has plans for how to make the most of the new era.

‘My personal goal is to surf more,’ Hathaway said with a laugh.

She told the November issue of Elle that she worried about her career when she was young.

‘In the beginning of my career, I was so worried about messing up that I missed a lot of great moments because I was so stressed out,’ the star told the publication.

Now OK: Seen last week in NYC. ‘I used to come to these things and I would truly tremble. I would be so anxious,’ Hathaway told the site. ‘It is a little sad that I was able to be in all those wonderful places and the only thing I could feel was scared’

Her blockbuster: With Heather Matarazzo, left, and Mandy Moore, right in The Princess Diaries in 2001

And she is now mature enough to really enjoy the good moments.

‘I’m at a point in my life now where I know having a first time at something remarkable like that—it’s the only time it ever happens,’ she added.

And she touched on the backlash she received in 2013 for her Oscar acceptance speech for Les Miserables.

‘Being in a place where I could enjoy it felt like a really positive development… I have worked too hard on seeing myself with kinder eyes to give away my peace to those who haven’t found it for themselves yet,’ said the star tactfully.

Happy to be in the mix: These days she is just happy to be asked to come. ‘I’m so lucky that my life has always been very, very full and fortunate. But I’m in a place where I’m able to enjoy it differently,’ she said. Seen in September in Telluride

‘So I do my best to not be afraid of what others might say and just focus on enjoying my life.’

Hathaway also said that she is grateful that she was so well received at Cannes this year.

‘You plant seeds in your life and then there come these moments where you harvest them—Cannes felt like a little bit of a harvest,’ she noted.

And she also discussed working with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett on the hit film Ocean’s 8 which was female driven.

‘My first day of shooting was the day after the 2016 election,’ she said.

‘We all got our hair and makeup done in the morning and then watched Hillary’s concession speech—and then cried, and then redid our hair and makeup, and then worked a 20-hour day. Because women are really tough.’

And she remembers looking around at all the women and wondering why this had not happened to her before.

‘Like, why has it taken this long into my career to have this many women on set?’ she said.

‘And then I remember having a distinct feeling: Oh, this is what it’s like to be a man in Hollywood. Wherever they go, they’re in a pack; there’s so much ease in this. And I just wanted more of it.

‘I thought, I have to make this an intention in my career. To work with other women and to create opportunities for as many women to work together.’

The big moment: Hathaway, from left, Anna Wintour, Serena Williams and New York mayor Eric Adams attend the Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2023 fashion show in September; the image looked like it was borrowed from The Devil Wears Prada
