Bernhard Langer accused of cheating to beat Tiger and Charlie Woods at PNC Championship

Accusations of rule-bending began to circulate online

Tiger Woods and his son Charlie Woods came tantalizingly close to claiming victory at the 2024 PNC Championship but were edged out in a dramatic playoff by Bernhard Langer and his son Jason Langer. Despite Team Woods’ strong showing, the defeat has sparked controversy, with the golf community questioning the legitimacy of the Langers’ victory.

The 36-hole scramble tournament at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club concluded with both Team Woods and Team Langer tied at a 15-under 57, forcing a sudden-death playoff. On the final hole, Bernhard Langer played from a forward tee, a move permitted by tournament rules.

Both teams reached the green, setting up similar-length eagle putts. The Langers sank their putt, securing the win and relegating the Woods duo to a heart-wrenching second-place finish.

However, what should have been a celebratory moment for the Langers quickly turned contentious as accusations of rule-bending began to circulate online.

Accusations of cheating

Golf fans took to social media to express their skepticism about Langer‘s tactics during the playoff. Paolo Uggetti, a journalist, fueled the debate by posting a zoomed-in photo of Langer‘s ball on the course, suggesting that he may have teed up his ball in a bunker to gain an advantage.

“I know it’s scramble rules, but we need to have a conversation about Langer literally teeing up his ball in the bunker so he could hit driver! The zoom-in camera did him no favors,” Uggetti wrote on X.

The golf community quickly piled on, accusing Langer of exploiting rules to his benefit. Comments ranged from light-hearted jabs to outright accusations.

“He’s basically a cheater… why don’t people already know this?” a user wrote.

Another added: “He’s always been on the edge kinda guy. I still don’t like how close he ‘doesn’t’ anchor his putter.”

The incident has reignited memories of past controversies involving Langer, including a dispute during a Ryder Cup match where his ball was near a water hazard.

Critics alleged he had improperly grounded his club, though no formal penalty was issued.
