Rory McIlroy admits he has an elbow issue, says game isn’t 100 percent heading into the Masters

Rory McIlroy shot 65-64 over the weekend of the Texas Children’s Houston Open. He tied for fifth place. Moments later he admitted to NBC Sports that his right elbow has been bothering, that he made a driver tweak Saturday on the range and that his game is not 100 percent.

The Masters starts in 11 days.

“Get some treatment on that and make sure that that’s OK going into Augusta,” the World No. 2 told NBC of his elbow.

As for the driver adjustment?

“I made a little tweak to my driver yesterday on the range after I played,” he said. “That worked out pretty well.

“I just took a little bit of loft off it. So I felt like it was getting a little bit spinny, especially if I wanted to hit cuts off the tee, so I took a little bit of loft off it. Yeah, definitely went through the wind better today and felt a little more comfortable.”

But not completely comfortable.

McIlroy, mind you, hasn’t finished worse than 17th place all year, including victories at Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass. The T-5 this week in Houston was not too shabby either, as he was eighth in stroked gained/off the tee and 27th in strokes gained/approach to the green. In his mind, however, that’s not good enough, or where he’d like to be heading to Augusta National where everyone in the world knows he’s looking to capture the final leg of the career Grand Slam.

“Still feel like I’ve got some stuff to work on,” he said. “Still don’t think my game is absolutely 100 percent under the control I would want, but it’s nice to have a week to work on some things. I’ve got my coach, Michael Bannon, coming in tomorrow, so we’ll be working at home and making sure game feels good going into the Masters.”
