A Romanian Woman Makes History: Giving Birth at 66

On Sunday, a remarkable event unfolded in Romania as a 66-year-old woman shattered records by giving 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡. Adriaпa Iliescᴜ delivered her daughter, Eliza Maria, via caesarean section at the Giulesti maternity hospital in Bucharest on January 16.

Iliescᴜ’s pregnancy was made possible through artificial insemination using donor eggs and sperm from “healthy young people,” according to hospital chief Bogdaп Mariпescᴜ. Additionally, she is believed to have undergone hormone-replacement therapy to ensure the successful development of her womb for hosting the embryos.

Though Eliza Maria arrived about six weeks prematurely, weighing only 1.4 kilograms (less than half the average new𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧’s weight), both mother and 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 are reported to be in good health. Doctors opted for a caesarean section after one of the triplets Iliescᴜ was initially carrying succumbed to heart failure at around five weeks into the pregnancy.

Pregnancy places an increased burden on the heart, especially for a woman in her mid-60s who is likely to have some degree of coronary heart disease, warns Kennedy. Furthermore, the process of 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 can lead to the formation of dangerous blood clots in the veins.

In addition, motherhood at such an advanced age presents potential challenges. Even if Iliescᴜ surpasses the average life expectancy in Romania of 73, Eliza Maria may experience the loss of her mother relatively early in life.”There are ethical concerns when a mother is old enough to be her daughter’s great-grandmother,” comments Kennedy.
