Who earned the most money as an athlete in the US: Mahomes, Curry, or Messi?

Let’s take a deep dive into the biggest salaries of the most popular athletes in American sports today

he MLS and Inter Miami just made a game-changing move by signing Lionel Messi to play in the United States. His contract does rival that of some of the biggest stars in sports right now. But we decided to compare his wages with two players from two of the most popular sports in the country. Lionel Messi’s contract will be pinned against the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Stephen Curry. These two are considered amongst the greatest athletes in American sports and future Hall-of Famers as well. But where exactly does Lionel Messi’s contract rank compared to the other two on this Top 3? First of all, let us say that Messi will be paid an estimated $54 million per season at Inter Miami. This should be the starting point in order to make a comparison.

Stephen Curry’s contract with the Golden State Warriors

Stephen Curry currently has a contract that secured him an estimated $51.9 million for last season alone. But the nature of his contract confirms that he will increase the value of the contract as years keep passing by. When he signed a new contract in 2022, he did so until 2026. With three years left on his contract, Stephen Curry will make an estimated $55.7 million next season and $59.6 million a year after that. But if we only count the season that is about to begin, he will make slightly more money than Leo Messi will. Still, the Argentine star’s salary is on the level of leagues such as the NBA, the NFL, and the MLB.

Patrick Mahomes’ contract with the Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes’ situation is a little different because we are currently going through a massive increase in quarterback contracts that has left him a little behind in terms of salary. Keep in mind that we are talking about the reigning NFL MVP from last season and he barely makes the Top 10 amongst the highest-paid quarterbacks. His current 10-year contract barely makes $42 million per season and it runs until 2027. Other NFL QBs are making $50+ million per season such as Lamar Jackson or Deshaun Watson. But the Kansas City Chiefs want to wait a bit until most QBs seal new deal, that will help them gauge better a number their quarterback deserves. By the time Mahomes gets to sign a new contract, he will be guaranteed no less than $60 million per season for the next 10 years. Well deserved.
