James Gunn’s Surprising Ranking of the Greatest Comic Book Movies Ever Made

You will be surprised, but Guardians of the Galaxy are not on the list.

In an interview with GQ, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and the newly minted CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, shared his top picks for comic book movies. Let’s check out his recommendation.

5. Deadpool

Gunn says that he loved both Deadpool and its sequel for being heartfelt, fun and overall well-made.

Not only does Gunn think that Deadpool is a perfect comic book adaptation, but he also points out that the movie manages to deliver the story in a more grounded way, which is certainly good.

4. Oldboy

Some of you might not know, but the Korean film is actually based on a manga. Gunn points out that the movie is groundbreaking in terms of action.

While it can be gross at times, Gunn thinks that Oldboy is very cinematic, colorful and shocking, in a good way.

3. A History of Violence

This is Gunn’s favorite movie directed by David Cronenberg’s, among his other works that Gunn also admires.

When James Gunn watched the movie for the first time, he didn’t know it was based on a comic book, but he loved the film for the action scenes and the way the directors shot them.

2. Superman

While it stands as an excellent film in its own right, the reason for its second position on the list stems from Gunn’s personal connection to it.

As a 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥, he watched this movie and it had a profound impact on his life. According to Gunn, it was the second most enchanting film he experienced during his 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥hood, just after Star Wars.

1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Surprisingly, the animated movie won the first place in Gunn’s heart. Gunn says that every aspect of the movie is great — the writing, the direction, the animation, the voicing… literally everything.

Movies that Gunn also considers deserving a mention are Iron Man (2008), V for Vendetta (2005), and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

When Gunn was also asked about top movies directed by him, he humbly responded that he cannot rank his own movies as they are like his own 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren to him.
