In 2021, director James Gunn released The Suicide Squad, starring, among others, John Cena as the Peacemaker. The character was wildly popular with fans, spinning off into a highly regarded television program – and is set to return in some fashion in James Gunn’s DCU films. When he does come back, Peacemaker Tries Hard #5 gives him the perfect catchphrase.

Peacemaker Tries Hard #5 is written by Kyle Starks, drawn by Steve Pugh, colored by Jordie Bellaire and lettered by Becca Carey. The preview opens with Peacemaker and his new allies, including the Golden Age hero the Red Bee, staging a raid to retrieve his dog ‘Bruce Wayne’, and stop the Brain from taking over the world. Peacemaker and Red Bee infiltrate the Brain’s lair, and notice all of his henchmen look alike. Peacemaker then becomes really happy when he realizes the clones are expendable; he charges into battle, joyfully yelling: “Time to get murdered by the Peacemaker, idiots!”

Peacemaker Keeps It Simple

Few characters have been so immediately and totally embraced by fans as Peacemaker. Until recently, Peacemaker was one of DC’s most obscure characters, more notable for being the inspiration for the Comedian in Watchmen. The publisher had tried several times to make the character stick, to no avail. Then, in 2021, director James Gunn incorporated the character into his The Suicide Squad, a soft reboot of the 2015 film Suicide Squad. Played by former WWE World Champion John Cena, the character became a fan favorite. Shortly after The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker starred in his own show on Max, also played by John Cena. James Gunn has hinted that Cena’s Peacemaker will return in his new cinematic DCU. Peacemaker’s New Catchphrase Is Perfect for His Over the Top Nature

Part of the Peacemaker’s appeal is just how over the top he can be. Peacemaker is hyper-nationalistic and uber-patriotic; he also takes himself way too seriously. His overarching mission – that he loves peace so much he is willing to fight and 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 for it – is contradictory, not to mention ridiculous. However, there’s an inner darkness to the character that is always present, showing just how destructive simplistic, absolutist ideologies can be when people are willing to do anything in their name. “Time to get murdered by the Peacemaker, idiots!” captures this dichotomy – it’s a silly, juvenile insult, and yet shows that Peacemaker does understand that actual people are being murdered in the name of Peacemaker’s misguided hero complex.

While the Peacemaker’s inevitable return is still a ways off, Peacemaker Tries Hard perfectly captures the spirit of Cena’s performance. Peacemaker‘s catchphrase in this issue plays to both the funny and darker aspects of the character, making it perfect for his return in James Gunn’s DCU.
