Aaron Rodgers sets timeline for permanent return to Jets

The idea that Aaron Rodgers could return this season has been floating around since he appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” following his Achilles surgery and said anything is possible.

Rodgers apparently went a step further Sunday night.

NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark said she had a conversation with Rodgers, who attended his first Jets game since the injury, and the quarterback told her he was shooting to return this season.

“His plan is to rejoin the team permanently after their Week 7 bye. And he told me his goal is to play again this season,” Stark said at the beginning of the broadcast, before the Jets lost 23-20 to the Chiefs at MetLife Stadium.

Rodgers was back with the Jets temporarily this weekend.

He met the Jets on Saturday at their hotel and spoke during the team meeting.

Fox’s Jay Glazer reported his message was “Stop pointing fingers.”

There has been frustration inside the Jets after losing two games in a row.

Stark said Rodgers would return to his California home this week and have his stitches removed before coming back to the Jets after the bye week.

The Jets’ bye is Oct. 22.

During pregame warm-ups, Rodgers walked onto the field using crutches.

He spent some time chatting with NBC broadcaster Mike Tirico on the Jets’ bench.

He then stood on the sideline and several Chiefs, including Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, came over to talk to him.

Afterward, Rodgers went up to a suite where he watched the game.

He watched his replacement, Zach Wilson, play his best game of the season.

CB Brandin Echols (hamstring) left the game in the first half and did not return … DL Al Woods was a surprise inactive Sunday night. The rest of the Jets’ inactives were: RB Israel Abanikanda, WR Jason Brownlee, G Wes Schweitzer, LB Zaire Barnes, S Tony Adams.
