18-year-old girl wins $50,000 scholarship to US university, set to become the first graduate in her family

An 18-year-old girl named Lyric Wise has been awarded 50,000 dollars worth of scholarship to study at a university in the United States.

Lyric Wise graduated from Paul Robeson High School in West Philadelphia, United States. She graduated as the second-best graduating student of her graduating set.

Being the first ever person to go to high school in her family, Lyric told Tallo.com that she made sure she spent her senior year doing everything right, from getting good grades to participating in as many extracurricular activities as the pandemic allows.

She was also the president of her school’s National Honor Society, participated in First Hand Philly, played softball, and volleyball, and was a cheerleader. Lyric even started her own nonprofit organization, Opioid Dependency Prevention all in the preparation of achieving her goal of going to college.

Lyric said she was determined to be the first to attend university in her family. She took college prep classes at The Community College of Philadelphia and The University of Pennsylvania planning for her major and future career.

However, when the Covid 19 pandemic hit and Lyric started finalizing her plans for continuing her education, but  there was one concrete obstacle standing in her way: the cost of higher education.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected her family, her mother being a single mother could not earn as much as she had before the pandemic. Lyric was forced to live apart from her mother for a period of time.

Despite the challenges, Lyric remained focused on her next steps and turned to Tallo Organisation in search of financial aid for her top choice university, Drexel University.

“College had always been part of the plan…the whole virtual experience was hectic. I’m a hands-on learner. But with everything I’d accomplished, I knew I couldn’t give up…but I was really this close to saying I’m over it,” she said.

She mentioned that she saw Tallo’s $10,000 scholarship opportunity, and she applied right away stating that what drew her attention to it was the fact that Tallo’s scholarship was a “no essay” one.

Lyric’s scholarship submission impressed the Tallo team, who were inspired by her intelligence, drive, and passion for education. Instead of sending her an acceptance message, they surprised her through Good Morning America.

She was awarded 50,000 dollars worth of scholarship on the show to further her studies at Drexel University. “The fact that people care about me learning, it just makes me want to go so much harder,” she said.

Lyric said she has plans to become a lawyer stating that her goal is to make a positive impact on her community.
