Ohtani stole two bases Sunday, giving him 20 steals and 28 home runs on the season.
LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani stole second and third base in the third inning on Sunday against Dallas Keuchel and the Brewers, making the Dodgers designated hitter the first player in the majors this season to reach both 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases.
One day earlier, Ohtani hit his 28th home run of the season, which leads the National League.
The second-most steals by a major leaguer with at least 20 home runs this year is 16 by José Ramírez of the Guardians with his 23 home runs. Among the players with 20 stolen bases, the most home runs by anyone but Ohtani is 15 by the Reds’ Elly De la Cruz, who has 43 steals.
This is the third time Ohtani has reached the 20-20 club, doing so with the Angels in both 2021 (46 home runs, 26 steals) and 2023 (44 homers, 20 steals).
Freddie Freeman last year (29 homers, 23 steals) had the Dodgers previous 20-20 season. The club hasn’t had a 30-30 player since Matt Kemp (39 homers, 40 steals) in 2011.
Ohtani is just the third Dodger ever with 20 homers and 20 steals before the All-Star break, joining Kemp (22 homers, 27 steals) in 2011 and Davey Lopes in 1979 (20 homers, 21 steals).
Ohtani is on pace this season for 50 home runs and 36 stolen bases. Nobody in a 50-homer season has ever stole 30 bases before.
“I’m getting already immune to hearing about some new Shohei record, because it seems like every day there’s something different,” manager Dave Roberts said Sunday morning. “I’m sure there’s going to be a lot more to come.”
