American singer-songwriter Nick Jonas and his wife, Indian actress and beauty queen Priyanka Chopra, were compelled to leave their US$20 million California mansion due to a severe mold issue.
Us Weekly disclosed that the family, including their daughter Malti, had to move, leaving the house empty for repairs.
Page Six reported the couple’s problems began in Apr. 2020 with pool and spa issues, leading to mold from “porous waterproofing,” as cited in a May 2023 lawsuit. A water leak in the barbecue area further damaged the mansion, making it “virtually unlivable” and a health risk.
Jonas and Chopra are thus seeking to rescind the purchase, alongside consequential damages, repair costs, and compensation for loss of use, with damages potentially exceeding US$4 million.
Purchased in Sep. 2019, the mansion features seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen, wine room, indoor basketball court, among other luxuries.
The lawsuit over the mansion’s issues has since spiraled into a complex legal battle involving the trustee, builder, subcontractors, and various workers, each shifting blame for the property’s defects. A trial may not occur until 2025.
Despite this, the couple reportedly remain hopeful for a resolution. A source close to them expressed to Page Six their disappointment over the building errors but anticipates the home’s restoration to perfect condition soon.
Jonas, 32, began his career on Broadway in 1999 and launched his debut single in 2002. He then formed the band Jonas Brothers with his brothers, which then gained fame as Disney Channel stars. After the band split in 2013, Jonas focused on his solo career.
Chopra, 42, won the Miss India and Miss World pageants in 2000. She is one of India’s highest-paid actresses and has been recognized globally, featuring on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in 2016, Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women list in 2017 and 2018, and the BBC 100 Women list in 2022.
