Chris Mullin identifies the most overlooked part of LeBron James’ greatness: “This guy’s been an example of excellence both on and off the floor”

LeBron James is a unique basketball player not only in terms of his on-court ability and honors but also because he has been the face of the NBA and basketball for the past two decades. Bron embodies the idea of sustained excellence, whether it’s his versatility, leadership in high-pressure moments, or the longevity that has allowed him to outlast his peers.

So, it is no surprise that he is heavily discussed by current and retired players. Some of them show appreciation, while some nitpick and look for holes in his resume. One of the old heads who recently talked about him is legendary sharpshooter Chris Mullin, who focused more on Bron’s appreciation and understanding of hoops history.

“LeBron, you know, he kind of watched Michael, Kobe, and Kareem and broke everyone’s records, so that’s the beautiful thing about the evolution of the game,” said Mullin. “They do take from the past, and what I love about LeBron James is not only his incredible, you know, excellence and, you know, the spectacular performance. He’s a historian of the game. He has respect for the history of the game; he always shows respect um, and what he’s able to do this deep into his career just attributed to how well he takes care of himself both on and off the floor. This guy’s been an example of excellence both on and off the floor.”

LBJ is a historian of the game

Golden State Warriors legend higlighted a unique element of Lebron’s legacy. “Mully” thinks that what sets Bron apart from others is that he is not solely focused on the present; Bron always gives credit to the players who shaped the game before him.

The four-time champ is always full of praise when discussing his idols, from Michael Jordan to Julius Erving to Kobe Bryant. Since his early days in the NBA, he has tried to take the best parts of their game and mindset.

This made LBJ different; he showed humility while breaking numerous records throughout his 22-year career. When the Los Angeles Lakers star reached one of the biggest milestones of his career, becoming a time-scoring leader, he took time to thank Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and acknowledge the importance of the legendary center.

Bron knew the assignment

As one of the most hyped prospects in basketball history, “King James” knew that the pressure would be high, and people expected great things. LeBron did deliver, and his mindset might be the main reason for it; of course, being the athletic specimen he is helped in the process, but considering the weight of the sports association on his young shoulders, the four-time MVP showed poise and courage to step onto the hardwood and proved his worth.

“I look at Tracy, Kobe, Iverson, they’re like in their ninth and 10th year, I’m trying to be on that same level (10 years from now). But even if I get there, that will be higher than my expectations of myself,” James said in an interview with SLAM in 2004.

The Ohio native is a generational player, and despite numerous achievements and jaw-dropping plays, he never forgot to give respect when due. As Mullin aptly pointed out, his respect for basketball’s history is just as remarkable as his on-court excellence. It’s a testament to his character and understanding of what it means to truly be a game steward.
