As reported by The Daily Beast, it has been revealed that Armstrong has deep ties to The Church of Scientology. According to internal records from the church, the FBI, and former members, Armstrong grew up in a Scientology-run dormitory for š¤š©šŖšš„ren known as the Sea Org. Born into the church, her family were also prominent members of Scientology, with her mother Gail working in their āintelligenceā unit and writing speeches for the churchās leaders.
When news broke about Armstrong becoming Linkin Parkās new co-lead singer, taking over for the late Chester Bennington, her involvement in the church came under heavy scrutiny. Specifically, many have pointed out her problematic support of Scientologist Danny Masterson (who has been charged with r*ping several women, and is serving 30 years in prison). Armstrong is even being accused of trying to intimidate Mastersonās victims.
One of Mastersonās accusers, Chrissie Carnell Bixler, called out Armstrong, claiming that she was a part of a group of Scientologists that tried to intimidate another one of his victims. Bixler, her husband (musician Cedric Bixler-Zavala), and two other women are suing Masterson and the church, claiming theyāve faced retaliation for speaking out. The Church of Scientology has denied being involved in Mastersonās trial, saying that attendees were simply exercising their right to attend a public hearing. They also have dismissed Bixlerās accusations, and are accusing her of trying to seek money from Masterson and Scientology.
Chester Benningtonās son, Jaime, is one of many who have raised concerns over Armstrongās involvement in the church. Jaime has very publicly criticized Linkin Park for choosing a Scientologist as their new singer, and has accused them of trying to erase his fatherās legacy.
Shortly after it was announced Armstrong would be joining Linkin Park, she released the following statement addressing her support of Masterson:āI wanted to clear the airā¦ Several years ago, I was asked to support someone I considered a friend at a court appearanceā¦ Soon after, I realized I shouldnāt have. I always try to see the good in people, and I misjudged him. I have never spoken with him sinceā¦ To say it as clearly as possible: I do not condone abuse or violence against women, and I empathize with the victims of these crimes.ā
