Sydney’s Olympic stadium will host the 2027 Rugby World Cup final with Victoria shut out of the tournament after protesting the axing of Melbourne Rebels, according to a News Corp report.
The report said unnamed sources confirmed Sydney’s Olympic Stadium, which hosted the 2003 World Cup final, will be awarded the marquee clash, the third place playoff and both semifinals.
News Corp reported Victoria “has been completely shut-out of the entire tournament after the state government withdrew its bid in a futile protest at the decision to cut the Rebels from Super Rugby, something which World Rugby had no involvement in.”
John O’Neill, the former RA chief executive who was in charge of the 2003 tournament said Sydney was the perfect venue.
“I’m not suggesting that Melbourne isn’t a sensational sports destination for a moment but in reality, for the Rugby World Cup, it’s not a natural fit,” O’Neill told News Corp.
“History and tribalism indelibly promotes Sydney as an event and rugby mecca so it’s overwhelmingly compelling.”
Perth’s Optus Stadium is considered front runner to host the opening match on October 1 – two days before the NRL grand final.
Brisbane’s 52,000 seater Suncorp Stadium has hosted many big Wallabies games but is apparently considered too small for a semifinal or opening match, but will host a quarterfinal.
Adelaide, Townsville and Newcastle have secured significant pool matches, while Sydney will be the only city with a second venue with Allianz Stadium also making the list.
