Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL debuted last night, but iconic radio host Mike Francesa was not a fan. The Bay Area Golf Club defeated New York Golf Club in the inaugural match of the tech-based golf league. Francesca is based in New York and works for WFAN, a New York-centric sports radio show.

Homa, who does not play for either of the teams that played last night, estimated that Francesa might be upset about how Woods and McIlroy’s league was going in its first start.

The radio icon said:

“I’m sure the great Tiger Woods, Rory, and friends are getting richer. But if the TGL is the future of sports, then the party is over!”

Homa, who is very active on X and doesn’t usually hold back, said in response:

“Would be a different tune if NY wasn’t getting routed.”

The Bay dominated and won 9-2 in the 11-hole match. Ludvig Aberg, part of the winning team, nailed the first birdie in the new league’s history and became a trivia answer all in the same night.

Homa is part of Woods’ own team, the Jupiter Links Golf Club. He is with the legendary golfer, Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner. They will play their first match on January 27 against Boston Common.

TGL golfers react to first-ever match

Shane Lowry acknowledged after the match that he “had an amazing two hours” as per ESPN. He and his teammates enjoyed an opening win for Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s long-awaited golf league.

Lowry joked:

“The last time I’ve had that much fun was probably last September.”

As he said this, he shot a look over at teammate Wyndham Clark, who was on the losing side to Lowry and company in the 2023 Ryder Cup. Clark also added that “no one had more fun” than he and his teammates that night. Rickie Fowler called the TGL facility a “glorified man cave.”

He also added:

“If it does well there, the sky’s the limit with what you can do. You can put up arenas in different places. This is just the start.”

Woods, who dreamed this all up long ago with McIlroy, said:

“This was just a dream conjured up. Rory and I were talking about it; it’s hard to believe that dream came into reality and we were able to take golf into another stratosphere, really.”

The 82-time PGA Tour winner went on to say that he knows this is “not traditional golf” but that it’s still golf, and that’s what is most important. If the opening night is any indication, TGL was a huge success and will remain popular for a long time.
