The 12 Upcoming Naval Vessels of India | The Future of the Indian Navy

India is on the verge of a significant transformation in its naval capabilities, with the impending launch of 12 advanced vessels that promise to redefine the operational landscape of the Indian Navy. As geopolitical tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific region, these new additions are set to enhance India’s strategic reach and combat readiness, bolstering its position as a formidable maritime power.

At the forefront of this expansion is the Project 17B-class frigate, a state-of-the-art stealth vessel equipped with advanced missile systems and a displacement of 8,000 tons. With an estimated cost of ₹9,994 crore (approximately $1.1 billion) per ship, these frigates will integrate indigenous technology and advanced sensors, significantly enhancing firepower and stealth capabilities.

The S5-class submarine, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, marks another milestone in India’s maritime defense strategy. Twice the size of the existing Arihant-class, it will carry up to 16 K6 missiles, equipped with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), thereby reinforcing India’s sea-based nuclear deterrent.

Additionally, the Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) and the Next Generation Corvette (NGC) will further diversify the Navy’s operational portfolio, focusing on anti-surface warfare and mine operations. The Project-75 (I) initiative aims to enhance indigenous submarine-building capabilities, presenting a strategic shift towards self-reliance.

Moreover, the INS Vishal, India’s third indigenously constructed aircraft carrier, is poised to revolutionize air operations at sea. With a projected displacement of 65,000 tons and advanced launch systems, it will significantly enhance India’s power projection capabilities.

As these vessels begin to enter service, the Indian Navy will not only augment its firepower but will also enhance its capacity for multi-role operations, disaster response, and humanitarian assistance. This ambitious naval expansion underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime interests and asserting its influence in a rapidly evolving strategic environment. The future of the Indian Navy looks poised for a formidable leap forward, with these advanced platforms set to redefine naval warfare in the region.
