The former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain boss has taken the challenge of turning around Chelsea after their nightmare 2022-23 season, with the Argentine set to official start work on July 1

Mauricio Pochettino has been confirmed as Chelsea’s new boss.

Pochettino will officially start work on July 1 and is facing a huge summer rebuild as he takes over at Stamford Bridge. Former Tottenham boss Pochettino has signed a two year contract with a further one year option which is on the club’s side.

Pochettino was Chelsea’s first choice from the day they sacked Graham Potter and was also the only manager they had serious discussions with in terms of job offers. The Argentinian has already indicated that he is keen to work with the current sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley in terms of transfers, direction and the club’s future.

That appealed to Chelsea who are clearly facing a busy summer of rebuilding after their disastrous end to the campaign which saw them miss out on a European place.

Stewart and Winstanley, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, said: “Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward.

“He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest levels, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development all made him the exceptional candidate.”

The club’s owners added: “We are delighted that Mauricio will be joining Chelsea. Mauricio is a world-class coach with an outstanding track record. We are all looking forward to having him on board.”

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has spent in excess of £600m on transfers but finished the campaign with Frank Lampard in temporary charge.

Now they will face having to shed big numbers of players with Mason Mount among the potential exits as Arsenal and Manchester United are keen.

They must also decide the future on Romelu Lukaku who has been on loan at Inter Milan but could yet have a future under Pochettino.

Pochettino had a hugely impressive spell at Tottenham, formerly worked at Southampton and Espanyol but has been waiting for the right job since Paris Saint Germain.

His greatest quality is his man management and diplomacy and the hope is that his first task will be to rebuild a fractured and broken dressing room. Chelsea have struggled to keep players happy because of all the new arrivals and Pochettino is seen as the manager to rebuild team spirit throughout the club,

Pochettino will take charge from July 1 and will also oversee their pre-season tour.
