It’s been two years since the release of Matt Reeves‘ 2022 film The Batman, and all eyes have turned towards its upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II, which has been experiencing delays. The build up to the sequel has been plagued by many rumors regarding production in recent weeks. Now one of the most highly anticipated DC movies is getting an update from DC Studios co-head James Gunn, and it is encouraging news.

The Batman Part II will see Robert Pattinson return as The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne. Batman’s law enforcement liaison, Jim Gordon, will see Jeffrey Wright reprise that role.

Story details for the upcoming sequel have largely been kept tightly shut, with Reeves and Mattson Tomlin (Terminator Zero) working on the script.

The production window for The Batman – Part II has reportedly been revealed, along with the timeline for when the DC movie will start announcing new casting additions. While James Gunn’s DC Universe will include a new Caped Crusader, Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe will continue to stand on its own as an Elseworlds property. Before The Batman sequel releases, The Penguin TV show will premiere later this fall, bridging the extended gap between the first movie and The Batman – Part II.

In a new report from The InSneider, The Batman – Part II cast is expected to start filming in April 2025, given the film’s release date being pushed to October 2026. The report also stated that new casting announcements are expected to begin rolling out in Fall 2024. At the time of this story’s publication, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios have not yet commented on this report.

Why Was The Batman – Part II Delayed?

While The Batman – Part II was initially slated to be released in October 2025, filming wasn’t able to get started in November 2023 as initially planned. For much of 2023, Hollywood was put on pause due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as the respective unions fought for better and fairer deals. While the WGA strike came to an end on September 27, 2023, the SAG-AFTRA strike didn’t conclude until November 9, 2023.

With unavailable cast members and a script that was still being worked on, The Batman – Part II was never going to be able to meet its October 2025 release date. It became evident when Jeffrey Wright, who plays Jim Gordon in the franchise, revealed in early 2024 that he still hadn’t received a script for The Batman – Part II. Not long after, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios made a public announcement that they would delay The Batman – Part II until 2026.

As frustrating as it may be, The Batman – Part II being delayed is only a good thing in the larger scheme of things. It’s far better for The Batman – Part II to not be rushed, allowing Reeves and his creative team to craft a powerful sequel. Hopefully, as the year goes on, the first batch of The Batman – Part II casting news will start to roll in as the world waits to learn more about the second chapter.
